The one-hit win. It does not happen often. ESPN had a reporter to a story on that in 2014. Between 1914 and 2014, it happened just 64 times. Interestingly enough it happened twice for the Dodgers in one season against the same opponent, the Cubs. On May 15th of 1965, Dick Ellsworth had a no-hitter going against the Dodgers into the 8th inning. In the bottom of the 8th. Torborg reached on an error by Ron Santo. Tracewski bunted and was safe on a fielder’s choice. John Kennedy moved both runners up with another sacrifice. Al Ferrara, pinch hitting for Bob Miller then slugged a three-run homer that would win the game, 3-1. It was the Dodgers only hit. Miller got the win and Jim Brewer shut the Cubs down in the 9th for the save.
Later that year, again at Dodger Stadium, Sandy Koufax and Bob Hendley both had hitless games going into the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Dodgers would score without the benefit of a hit. Johnson walked. Fairly laid down a sac bunt that Hendley bobbled leaving his only play at first. Johnson then stole third and the catcher, Chris Krug, threw the ball wildly and Johnson scored. Johnson would get the games only hit in the seventh when he hit a bloop fly behind the second baseman, Glen Beckert. By the time Ernie Banks reached the ball, Johnson was on second. Fairly grounded out to end the inning. Koufax kept his perfecto going and won 1-0.
The Giants in 2010 lost two games in which the opposition had just 1 hit. The first one was to the Padres and Mat Latos, the run scored on a hit, stolen base, a foul pop on which the runner advanced, and a sac-fly. In September, they lost to Kershaw and the Dodgers, 1-0 when the run scored on a hit batter, two walks and an error. The only Dodger hit, a single by Matt Kemp had nothing to do with the outcome. Barry Zito lost to Kersh who threw one of his 25 career complete games.
MiLB GAME SUMMARIES
Tacoma Rainiers (Seattle) 5 – OKC Comets 2
This was not a good game for the LAD rehab players. The Dodgers were hoping for a 5.0 innings out of Tony Gonsolin. Instead they 4.0 less than effective innings. While he may have struck out 5, he allowed 3 hits on 6 hits and 1 walk. He threw 66 pitches, 43 pitches.
A second LAD pitcher on a rehab assignment also had a forgettable night. Evan Phillips pitched 1.0 inning (19 pitches/16 strikes). He allowed 2 runs on 3 hits. He did strike out 2. Too much of the plate for both pitchers?
The three relievers finished off the final 4.0 scoreless innings, They had a combined 3 hits and 2 BB.
The Comets scored 2 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits, 1 BB, and 1 error. The big hit was Kody Hoese’s 2-run triple (1). 3 OKC hitters had 8 of the 9 hits.
- Hunter Feduccia – 3-4, 1 run
- Kody Hoese – 3-4, 2 RBI
- Dalton Rushing – 2-3, 1 BB
Tulsa Drillers 3 – Wichita Wind Surge (Minnesota) 0
Peter Heubeck started for Tulsa and was ejected from the game after the top of the fourth inning. Following a lengthy inspection, umpires ejected Heubeck for suspicion of a foreign substance.
Heubeck was very effective while in the game. In his 4.0 scoreless IP he threw 60 pitches, 34 for strikes. He allowed 1 hit with 3 BB, to go with 8 strikeouts. Was it a foreign substance?
Kelvin Bautista, Lucas Wepf, and Christian Suarez pitched the final five scoreless innings to preserve the 5-hit shutout. This was Tulsa’s 2nd win of the young season, and 2nd shutout. 4 hits, 3 BB, and 2 K.
With 2 outs in the 5th, Taylor Young singled. He moved to 2nd on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on John Rhodes’ single. Damon Keith followed Rhodes and reached 1st on an error, and Rhodes came all the way around to score.
In the 7th, Chris Newell singled. He moved to 2nd on a ground out and scored on another John Rhodes RBI single.
- John Rhodes – 2-3, 1 BB, 1 run, 2 RBI
- Chris Newell – 2-4, 1 run, double (2)
- Griffin Lockwood Powell – double (3)
Dayton Dragons (Reds) 10 – Great Lakes Loons 2
Great Lakes opened the scoring in the 2nd. Kole Myers stroked a one out single to RF and scored on Nelson Quiroz’s third double of the season for a 1-0 lead.
Dayton tied the game in the 3rd, and broke it open with 7 in the 4th off LHP Luke Fox and RHP Noah Ruen.
Down 10-1 in the 7th, Logan Wagner (5) and Zyhir Hope (4) hit back to back doubles to score their 2nd and final run. Zyhir Hope had his 5th multi hit game in the first ten games of the season.
The first four pitchers for the Loons allowed 7 hits and 10 walks to score their 10 runs. Each of the pitchers each allowed at least one run. The Dragons had a double, a triple, and 2 home runs. The big home run was a grand slam by 22 year old LF Anthony Stephan (1).
The final pitcher for Great Lakes was 2B, Wilman Diaz. He did give up 2 hits and a BB, but no runs were scored.
- Logan Wagner – 2-4, 1 BB, 1 run, double (5)
- Zyhir Hope – 2-5, 1 RBI, double (4)
- Nelson Quiroz – 2-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI, 2 doubles (4)
Chris Campos will get the start for the Drillers on the Wednesday day game.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4 – San Jose Giants (San Francisco) 3
Today, the 5-4 Quakes started a 6-game series against the 6-3 San Jose Giants.
RC OF Samuel Munoz had a three-hit day including a single for the walkoff win in the 10th, as the Quakes won Game 1 of the series, and stayed perfect at home.
Munoz smashed a Ryan Slater offering down the first-base line to lead off the tenth inning, scoring Mike Sirota, who opened the inning at second base. The win for the Quakes is their second straight overall and keeps them a perfect 4-0 at home.
Munoz drove in the game’s first run too, as he singled home Kellon Lindsey in the first inning, as the Quakes tied the game at 1-1. Lindsey drew a BB, moved to 2nd on a WP and scored on the Munoz single.
Rancho took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. With one out, Jaron Elkins singled, and moved to 3rd on a Eduardo Quintero single. Elkins scored on the front end of a Elkins/Quintero double steal. Quintero scored on a Mike Sirota double (3).
San Jose scored a run in each of the 6th and 7th innings to tie the score.
In the tenth, Logan Tabeling stranded the inherited runner at third base, tossing a scoreless frame. With Munoz’s walkoff, Tabeling earned his first win of the year.
Quakes’ starter, 19 year old Samuel Sanchez (#28 LAD prospect) was strong in his first home start of the year, allowing just one run on six hits over 4.2 innings, striking out six along the way.
The Quakes will send RHP Hyun-Seok Jang to the hill on Wednesday.
- Samuel Munoz – 3-5, 2 RBI
- Kellon Lindsey – 2-4, 1 BB, 1 run
- Mike Sirota – 2-4. 1 HBP, 1 run, 1 RBI, double (3)
- Jose Meza – 1-3, 1 HBP, double (1)

Dodgers are now 17-4 on Jackie Robinson Day.
Good game. Nice to see Taylor showing signs of life.
One hit wins? Remember when the Dodgers won a game vs the Angels with no hits! Good pitching by Chad Billingsley shutout the Angels and we scored on a couple of errors,a stolen base and a sac fly.
How about zero-hit wins?
My 15-year-old, the crafty southpaw with the sub-1.00 ERA, was on a short spring break holiday. So were four key teammates–and all missed Sunday’s games.
But his team, the Eagles, mustered just enough players to take on an Orioles team they usually dominated.
After one inning, the score was 0-0. Four different Eagle pitchers would pitch in the second inning.
Walk. Error. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. STRIKE OUT! STRIKE OUT! Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. Walk. STRIKE OUT!
Eleven runs would walk across that inning.
The final score would be Angels 11, Eagles 2.
The Eagles finished with three hits, and the Angels had none.
Fortunately, I did not witness this debacle.
My son told me that his teammates blamed it all on the dirty, rotten. biased umpires.
Who had Heubeck as a cheat on their game card?
Tyler Glasnow is on the latest The Windup podcast from The Athletic
really great conversation which touches on:

Kershaw was awesome today at OKC.
Bear- Loved your article, you do a great job. Something I noticed that you don’t see now is sacrifice bunts and hitting behind runners. That’s old school don’t want to give away outs. I realize that hind vision is 20/20 but last night when Taylor came up with the bases loaded and no one out, I was hoping to see him bunt. Taylor is an excellent bunter and the bottom of our lineup is not producing. Sometimes one needs to manufacture runs and when a certain part of the order isn’t getting it done maybe a different approach by the part of the lineup would be appropriate. Taylor’s at bat produced a run but at the expense of two outs. We had a great opportunity to have a big inning. With Colorado playing back they were conceding the run for a double play, they got what they wanted.
Reading your article batters such as Ron Fairly, if I recall correctly, I was young, hit in the middle of the lineup, but yet he was bunting. I’m not even remotely suggesting that our first five or six look to play small ball but if your hitting under.220 maybe mixing up a little bit would be a good deal.
Finally, I wonder how much teams spend defending the bunt. I’m sure in spring training it’s gone over in detail, but with no one bunting now, I wonder how well a defense would handle it. Just wish Taylor would have bunted in that situation.
Bear thanks for your hard work and yours and Jeff’s serious dedication to this site.
We signed the right closer this off season. Williams really struggling with Yankees
You folks remember when the Dodgers won getting no hits? I remember watching it on TV: https://www.mlb.com/cut4/the-dodgers-won-with-no-hits-in-2008-c282802370
Oops — I see below someone else covered this 🙂
Getting tired of chris taylor and max Muncy swinging like eveey swing needs ti be a homerun how about bit juts try to get base huts right now and then the Homer’s will come. Hey wouldn’t like a Trent Grishom from the Yankees be good for the Dodgers centeefield and move edman to secondbase full time wouldn’t they want taylor and Muncy they must have a thridbaswman some where how the dodgers don’t is mind blowing.

Muncy has four career homers against tonight’s Rockies starter, Marquez.
I would guess Dave Roberts was none too happy with Freeman last night. The Dodgers do not want their star to reinjure his ankle while trying to steal bases. Freddie was thrown out in his only attempt last night.
Bobby Miller’s trade value is negative now.
Bottom of the line up got the job done tonight. 5 of the 8 runs knocked in by Muncy, Pages and Barnes. 10 Ks by the hitters again, but the pitchers struck out 16 Rockies. Miller was great, for 2 innings.
Clean sweep by the affiliates tonight.
