Mookie, AB, Pitching and Defense Dominate Miami in DH Sweep and Series Win

I have been looking forward to watching Eury Pérez pitch against the Dodgers.  I first saw Pérez in 2021 pitching for Beloit (A+, Midwest League).  He absolutely dominated the team as an 18 year old.  I saw him dominate another team while pitching in AA Pensacola in 2022.

He is 6’8” and relatively thin, can throw 100, and average 98.2.  But it was the breaking balls where he truly dominated the Dodgers.  He threw his slider 33 times, 15 swings, and 9 whiffs.  He threw his curveball 19 times, 10 swings, and 7 whiffs.  It seemed effortless.

He had 22 whiffs in 6.0 IP.  He allowed 2 hits, no BBs, and 10 Ks.  He threw 90 pitches: averaging 15 pitches per inning.  It was like watching a RH Randy Johnson…without the fear factor of course.

Pérez was not the only impressive pitcher in the 1st game.  Ryan Pepiot made his long waited season debut, and pitched extremely well.  He was the bulk inning reliever in a bullpen game.  He gave up an infield single and then a run scoring double.  He completed 5.0 innings, allowing the one run on 3 hits.  He struck out 5, and had 14 whiffs of his own.  Pepiot’s slider was his most impressive pitch.  19 pitches, 10 swings, 7 whiffs.  He still needs to fully develop his double plus changeup to get ML hitters to chase.

Pepiot got some help in the 3rd.  With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, Josh Bell lofted a ball to David Peralta RF. Peralta made the catch and unleashed a throw home, that did not quite make it.  Austin Barnes picked it and did a nice sweep tag on Jorge Soler who never did reach home to complete the 9-2 DP.

Ryan Yarbrough (2.0 IP) and Evan Phillips (1.0 IP) finished the game without allowing a baserunner.

LAD was down 1-0 in the 8th with David Robertson on the bump.  With one out, James Outman worked a 3-2 pitch walk.  Kiké Hernández singled Outman to 3rd.  Austin Barnes laid down a perfect bunt to plate Outman to tie the score.  Josh Bell threw the ball away and that put Hernández and Barnes on 3rd and 2nd.

Mookie singles both runners home.  Both Dino Ebel and Freddie telling Austin to slide, and Barnesy would have none of it as he scored standing up.  The Dodgers came from behind to take a 3-1 lead, and Phillips completed the save, his 19th of the season.

In the nightcap, Julio Urías took the mound looking for a sweep and a series win against the pesky Marlins.  LHSP Braxton Garrett has been quietly outstanding this season for the Fish.

Urías grooved a center cut 1-0 four-seamer to Josh Bell who crushed a 431 foot HR and gave Miami a 1- 0 lead.

The two newbies got together to tie the game in the 2nd.  Amed Rosario doubled and eventually scored on a Kiké Hernández single.

Then Mookie took over.  Solo HRs in the 3rd and 5th gave LAD a 3-1 lead.

Julio was not overly dominant, but he was good enough to go 7.0 innings on 100 pitches and limit Miami to the one run.  He had some fantastic defense to back him up. This is why Miggy Rojas is the LAD SS.

In a 3-1 game, that is a back breaker.

Ryan Brasier continued his excellent LAD relief work with a scoreless 8th, all leading up to Brusdar Graterol’s save opportunity in the 9th.  Brasier has appeared in 24 games with LAD (24.1 IP).  He has allowed 4 runs (3 earned), for a 1.11 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP.  He is as effective of a setup reliever as there is in MLB.

Graterol was not as effective.  It took some outstanding D to get the save.  Once again it was the Rosario and Hernández show that put the game on ice.

Amed Rosario was not a good defensive SS at all, but he is becoming a very good defensive 2B.  Not near the Mookie level, but good nonetheless.  BTW, Mookie has to be considered to be the full time regular 2B in 2024.

I might as well show a couple of other outstanding defensive plays executed on this day.

I absolutely love well pitched games with outstanding defense and smart baseball. These two games had it all.

Eury Pérez was the most dominant pitcher on the day.  I am very much looking forward to watching Eury develop even more.  José Fernández was unbelievably dominant as a 20 year old Marlins pitcher.  On September 25, 2016, he was tragically killed in an early AM boating accident off the coast of Miami.  He would be 31 today.  Just how good of a rotation would Miami have with Fernández, Alcántara, Pérez, Luzardo, and Garrett.  Pérez (Dominican) does not have the favorite son status that Fernández (Cuba) had, but he will be bringing in the fans.

This is going to be a tough Miami team to face in a short series.

The Dodgers moved to 17-2 in the month of August, and 9-1 on the homestand.  It wasn’t just the Rockies they beat, but also two potential playoff teams: Milwaukee and Miami.  They are now 12.0 games ahead of San Francisco, 13.0 games ahead of Arizona, and 18.0 games ahead of San Diego.  They are running away with the NL West once again.

Next stop, Cleveland and Boston.  Game 1 – Bobby Miller vs Noah Syndergaard.

If Betts is moved to second where does that put Vargas? Still early but any thoughts as to whether the Dodgers try to sign Rosario?

Good recap Jeff!
Dodgers are playing great baseball in August. Even Austin Barnes contributed this month. Austin was instrumental in at least two wins this week. Amazing that the Dodgers lead the unbeatable/big budget Padres by 18 games! And the Dodgers have overcome several key injuries to build their lead. Great MVP level performances this year by Freddie and Mookie plus solid contributions from the entire roster. And despite my concerns about roster weaknesses, Friedman and Roberts have been great this year. Enjoy the ride and appreciate the excellence of this franchise.

Fun two games to watch. Barnes positioning himself to be the Dodgers MVP this month.

Singing the Blue

Just checked the standings and was surprised to see that the Mariners have gotten themselves to within 3 games of the Rangers in the American – West after sweeping the Astros.

I wonder where they’d be if they had Ohtani in the middle of their lineup and rotation. I bet Shohei is wondering the same thing. He has spent time the past 2 off seasons living there and supposedly loves the city.
